Achieving high scores on the TOEFL iBT
TOEFL Internet Based Test was launched in the United States on September 24, 2005.
The information on this page will let you know what to expect from the next generation TOEFL and how to prepare and achieve high scores on the TOEFL iBT.

1. What is TOEFL iBT?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language LanguageTM (TOEFL ®) Assessment Proficiency and general understanding of the English Language for people whose first language is not English.

Used to assess international students planning to study in the United States and Canada, and academic institutions outside the U.S. and Canada that use English.

The TOEFL exam has gone from paper to computer-based in most countries with two of the four sections in the Computer Based TOEFL (listening and sections of the structure) is computer adaptive. This allows the computer-based TOEFL test questions to be directed at the performance of an individual.

2. Why is it important TOEFL iBT?
If English is not their mother tongue, many business schools, you will need to take the TOEFL Internet-based test to indicate that you will be able to function in a learning environment where English is the dominant language.

Scores for the TOEFL Internet Based provide information on the performance of examinees in the four areas (see Section 4), which need to be proficient to succeed in an academic environment.

3. How can you prepare for the TOEFL iBT?

4. What is the structure of the TOEFL iBT?
The test, which is reflected in the resources TOEFL iBT practice test available, divided into four sections, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The style of English to test across North America is English and some of the questions require you to combine more than one skill through integrated questions or tasks. For example, you will read, hear and talk in response to a question.

The Listening section measures your ability to understand spoken English and answer 50 questions using headphones to listen to recorded conversations and talks. You have up to 90 minutes to complete this section and note taking is allowed.

The speaking section is a section of new developments in the Internet Based TOEFL (this is not on the computer or paper based TOEFL) and is designed to test your ability to speak English.

There are six tasks that took part in the TOEFL iBT. In two of these tasks, call Independent speaking tasks you will be asked to express an opinion on a subject that is familiar.

The remaining four tasks are called integrated Speaking tasks which will give you information, whether written, oral, or both, on a topic. Then they asked him to speak up to 60 seconds on the subject.

You have 20 minutes to complete this section and for all tasks to be given up to 30 seconds to prepare a response before speaking.

The reading section measures your ability to read and understand short passages that are likely to encounter in American colleges and universities.

You are required to answer questions about reading passages provided in this section and the time available is up to 100 minutes depending on the number of questions to be answered.

The writing section tests your ability to write in English. This section is divided into two tasks, one integrated task in which they are required to write based on what you read and hear, and independent work where you need to generate ideas on a topic and give examples or evidence supporting clear and grammatically correct manner.

The time available for this section is 50 minutes 20 minutes to split the task of integrating and 30 minutes for independent work.

An important difference between the Internet Based TOEFL and the Computer Based TOEFL paper or is that no section of the structure on the TOEFL iBT. This is now evaluated in oral and written sections.

In total, the TOEFL iBT is 4 hours (up to 3 hours for the TOEFL paper and 3.5 hours for the Computer Based TOEFL) and all sections will be completed in one day.

5. How is the TOEFL iBT?

The next generation of Internet-based TOEFL test is administered on fixed dates and a safety net, approved ETS testing centers based on the Internet.

The first Internet-based TOEFL was administered in the United States on September 24, 2005 and launched in the Internet test centers located in Canada, Italy, France and Germany on October 22, 2005.

The TOEFL iBT will be extended to all other countries in 2006, in accordance with the timetable announced by ETS on October 1, 2005.

Until TOEFL iBT was introduced in a country, the current paper-based TOEFL tests and the computer (and Test of Spoken English) continued to be administered. The TOEFL iBT will be given instructions to answer the questions in each section and, as the test is computer adaptive, each the test taker receives the same questions in any given form of the TOEFL iBT.
